Mother

2026 - 27

A while ago I wanted to grow flowers for a flower stall where I would give the bouquets away in the town of my birth. The season came and went, and the idea grew into 'Mother'.

This is an ongoing process-based work: growing my mum's favourite flowers from seed and tending them until they flower, ready to cut.

The project mirrors for me the nature of mothering; quiet acts of tending, nurturing, protecting, waiting for something to take root and grow into something beautiful. I've also been reading about floriography, the historical language of flowers, where different blooms carry hidden, symbolic meanings. Whilst I love a symbolic meaning, I let mum lead with what she liked most, though some, like peonies, did have perfect symbolism for the project.

Raising these plants from seed, Mother slowly grows a living letter of gratitude, gestation and connection to mum, with the final bouquets physically "birthing" into the work. Months of unseen daily labor and patience, hopefully no health scares, ultimately distilled into the simple act of giving mum flowers.

Looking ahead to Mother's Day in March 2027.
